The Daily Recommended Skin Care Routine
Throughout the day, our skin is continually exposed to chemicals, pollutants, dirt, and excess oil. If left unaddressed, these can clog pores, trigger inflammation and breakouts, and accelerate the aging process.
1. Gentle Cleansing
Everyone should cleanse their face daily, but this step should never be harsh. Over-cleansing or using aggressive products strips away natural oils, breaking down the skin’s protective barrier and causing dryness, irritation, and even excessive oil production as the skin tries to compensate.
The goal of cleansing (once or twice daily) is to remove dirt, debris, and excess oil without stripping the skin of its essential natural oils. A healthy barrier keeps the skin hydrated, resilient, and balanced. Like the gut, your skin has a microbiome—a community of healthy bacteria—that protects against inflammation and infection. Gentle cleansing supports and maintains this natural defense system.
2. Moisturizing
After cleansing, it is essential to apply a moisturizer. Cleansing makes the skin more permeable, allowing moisturizers to penetrate and work more effectively when applied immediately. A good moisturizer replenishes lost moisture, seals in hydration and essential lipids, and prevents dryness and irritation. This step also protects against environmental stressors and premature aging.
3. Retinoic Acid (Vitamin A Derivative)
Including retinoic acid in your routine is key for long-term skin health. Retinoic acid boosts cellular turnover, helping old, damaged cells shed more easily and allowing healthy new cells to surface. Deeper in the skin, it stimulates collagen production, rebuilding the skin’s structural framework. This leads to firmer, thicker skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Retinoic acid also reduces hyperpigmentation, refines pores, fades sunspots, and improves the appearance of acne scars. With consistent use, retinoic acid can truly reverse signs of aging.
4. Daily Sunscreen
Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging and a major risk factor for skin cancer. UV rays penetrate through clouds and even windows, causing invisible damage every day.
Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher shields your skin from harmful UV rays, preserves collagen and elasticity, maintains even skin tone, and prevents sun damage, dark spots, and skin cancer. Apply it every morning as the final step in your routine, and reapply as needed if outdoors.
